To encrypt messages on Outlook using S/MIME, you first need to set up a signing certificate on your computer. Once you have it, you can also configure certificates for your Outlook account. step:

  3. Find Certificates and Algorithms and select a S/MIME certificate. Click OK.

You can also encrypt individual messages:

  3. Check Encrypt email content and attachments.
  4. Compose your email and click Send.

How to send secure emails in Gmail

Gmail is by far the most popular email provider in the world. But it's also the most vulnerable to malicious threats, phishing, malware, scams, and more. That's not to say Gmail is completely lacking in privacy and security. It does not perform well in terms of ease of delivery and use.

Gmail now uses TLS (Transport Layer Security) by default, the successor to SSL, so they are often used interchangeably (though TLS is a newer version).

However, G Suite users can also enable S/MIME for extra protection.

To do this, both the sender and recipient must have S/MIME enabled and exchange security "keys" with each other.

Here's how emailing secure documents works:

  1. Compose your message and add your recipients in the To field.
  2. A lock icon will appear, depending on the recipient's encryption level. Click that lock.
  3. You can learn more about the recipient's encryption level or modify your S/MIME settings by selecting View Details. The S/MIME encryption levels are (from lowest to highest): red, grey, and green. Never send any personal information to someone with a red S/MIME level.

If enabling S/MIME seems too complicated, another option for sending secure and anonymous emails through Gmail is to use a 3rd party extension like SecureGmail. You can install it from the Chrome Web Store.

After activating it on Gmail, you should see a lock icon next to the Compose button.

If you want to write an encrypted email, you need to click that lock:

  1. The header will now display Secured with a lock symbol below New Message and,
  2. The Send button will now change to Send Encrypted.

Click Send Encrypted, you will need to enter the password in the popup window.

The recipient will need this password to decrypt your email. However, since this will only give them a hint about the password, you will need to send them the password in a separate message.

Use encrypted email service
